You’re Almost 40… It’s Normal” — But I Knew Something Was Off

Where do I even begin…
Let’s start when I turned 37. In one year, I gained over 10 pounds.
And this wasn’t normal for me.
I’ve never been someone whose weight fluctuated easily. I’ve always lived within a comfortable 5-pound range—consistently. So when the scale started creeping up, and nothing in my lifestyle had changed… I knew something was off.
So I went to my doctor.
The response?
“Ahh well… you’re almost 40. This is normal.”

I remember thinking—WHAT?! Are you kidding me?
Because here’s the thing…
If I wasn’t taking care of myself—if I wasn’t training, eating well, prioritizing my health—I could understand that answer.
But I was doing everything right.
And my body still wasn’t responding.
So I took matters into my own hands.

Step One: I Rebuilt My Foundation
I hired a coach—someone to hold me accountable and take a deeper look at what was going on.
We didn’t go extreme.
In fact, we did the opposite.
We cleaned up my nutrition
We reduced my training volume
We focused on lowering stress and cortisol
(Side note: managing cortisol as we age is EVERYTHING—but that’s a blog for another day.)
I also:
Cut back on social drinking (huge for inflammation)
Started tracking and weighing my food
And guess what?
It worked.
I dropped the initial weight and got back close to my baseline.
But…
There were still 5 pounds that would NOT move.
My body felt… stuck.

The Part No One Talks About
Here’s where it really started to get frustrating.
I’m a trainer.
I KNOW what to do.
And I was doing it.
At 38, as a mom of 3, balancing business, stress, life…
I started to feel like my body was working against me.
Slow. Resistant.
Honestly?
Broken.
And that feeling hits differently when you’re someone who’s always been in control of your health.
Because when you’re putting in the work—and not seeing results—you start questioning everything:
Am I not doing enough?
Should I eat less?
Train more?
Push harder?
But what I realized changed everything… 👉 It wasn’t that I needed to do more.
👉 It was that my body needed more support.

The Missing Piece
Now let me be clear…
I didn’t skip the basics.
Those will always come first:
✔ High protein
✔ Whole foods
✔ Consistent movement
✔ Daily habits
That foundation is non-negotiable.
But once that was in place…
I added one specific layer of support.
And that’s when everything shifted.
👉 That’s when the last 5 pounds finally came off
👉 That’s when my body started responding again
👉 That’s when I stopped feeling stuck
And no…
It wasn’t a quick fix.
It wasn’t a shortcut.
It was understanding what my body needed in this season of life.
So I did the work.
I dove into research. Listened to podcasts. Read studies. Learned everything I could—until I felt confident in my decision.
And what I discovered?
I wish someone had explained it to me sooner.
What’s Next
In my next post, I’m breaking it all down:
What I added
Why it works
The science behind it
And how it compares to what’s currently trending
Because if you’ve been feeling stuck…
You’re going to want to understand this.
